Rosetta Stone, The
- This one meter (1.094 yards) high slab of black basalt, made in 196 BC, shows the same decree honoring Ptolemy V inscribed in Egyptian hieroglyphics, Demotic Egyptian and Greek. It was this stone that led to the eventual deciphering of the Egyptian hieroglyphics in 1822 by French Egyptologist, Jean Francois Champollion. It was discovered in 1799 by a soldier serving in Napoleon's campaign in Egypt.
